Welcome to our Summer Newsletter!

It is so great that the sun has started shining and the world is turning like it used to. Parties, festivals, events, its all happening and isn't it exciting!!

So what have Rotary in Romsey been up to since our last Spring edition 🤔 then read on....

April 2022

We had an amazing visit from Antony Hurle from Hampshire Fire & Medical in Romsey. After joining us for supper he told us all about his lifelong involvement with the Fire Service from when he was a toddler to Station Commander in London. If you have not visited the Fire Brigade Museum in Timsbury then it is definitely worth a visit. It currently houses fire equipment from an 1874 horse drawn appliance up to the modern day vehicles and includes a 17th century fire bucket and 1,000 of uniforms.. The museum is open to visitors on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. All entry fees (£3.50) are used to keep the museum open and running. It is staffed by volunteers and it is looking to recruit more in a variety of roles.

May - 2022

The Relay Marathon was well and truly back!!

Now in it’s ninth year, the Barratt Homes Romsey Relay Marathon returned on Sunday May 1st at Broadlands after a hiatus of two years due to Covid.

This event attracts runners of all abilities aiming to run a full marathon with teams of ten where each team member runs two laps of the 1.3 mile loop around Broadlands so that the team collectively run a full Marathon.

The Relay Marathon is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Romsey with an organizing committee drawn from both Rotary clubs. Members from both clubs participate in setting up and running the event with additional support provided by Romsey Men’s Shed, Romsey Walking Football Team and several local Scout groups.

This year, 110 teams (each of 10 runners) participated in the event, and together with their friends and family who came to support them, the organizers estimated that there were over 2,500 people on site.

Teams were invited to bring their gazebos and together with music and children’s entertainment, it was a great family day out for many.

Although many teams enter just for the fun and pleasure of running, there are always some teams with experienced runners who compete against the clock. This year Romsey Road Runners finished with the best time (again!) in 2:29:00 with Winterslow Whippets a close second. Alexis Green (of South Today weather fame) came third with her team ‘Happy Feet’.

The Relay Marathon committee is looking forward to continuing success with it’s new home of the Rotary Club of Romsey Test aiming for an event in May 2023.

17th May 2022

We helped support Romsey Abbey with the lunchtime Recital from Ukrainian pianist Ivan Hovorun.

What a fabulous concert it was.

Funds raised were donated to UNICEF Ukraine Appeal.

24th May we held our Reminiscences of Romsey in the Crossfield Hall. Over eighty guests from societies and friendships enjoyed a cream tea provided by the ladies of the Inner Wheel of Romsey. There was games, music and entertainment. A lovely event enjoyed by all. If you would like to read more please follow the link to our blog....

June 2022

Another lovely visit from a local charity to our breakfast meeting was Mary from Romsey Young Carers, many already knew her, from her time in charge. Mary is now a volunteer.

Like all charities money is short and bills have to be paid. Romsey Carers have recently taken on new premises and work is needed to help suit their requirements. For instance an office that is far too large and a lounge area that requires furnishing. Volunteers are required. Within the charity there are various clubs and volunteers are always needed including a requirement for male role models. Should you wish to get involved please visit their website for contact details www.romseyyoungcarers.org.uk They will also be hosting a gazebo at the Mayors Picnic on the weekend.

27-29th June 2022

We are excited to be supporting The Romsey School with their Young Enterprise Project. This year will see an 'Apprentice’ style business task over a two day period. The students will need to design, make and promote a business idea that actually works!. We will let you know how they got on!

3rd July - Mayors Picnic & Duck Race

We are so excited to be bringing this event back to Romsey Memorial Park. We have a full program of events from musical entertainment from the Romsey Voices, Romsey Youth Children's Choir and the Mountbatten Choir.
